Taking Parent and Child Pictures During Your Senior Portrait Session

Senior year in high school is a coming-of-age milestone, a signal to the world that you’re maturing. You’re about to turn 18 and enter the world of adulthood.

Senior portraits, in essence, capture this journey to adulthood by celebrating your accomplishments thus far and embracing the person you’ve become.

But who is the person that you are today without your family and support system? We all have so much to be thankful for when it comes to our family.

Parent and child pictures are a great way to celebrate this moment and let your family feel appreciated. Whether it’s a mother-daughter picture, father-son picture, father-daughter picture, grandfather-grandson picture - you get it…

These pictures are an exceptionally personal way to celebrate and share this moment with the ones that matter most.

Tips To Taking Pictures with Your Loved Ones

Getting your family and loved ones involved in your senior portrait session will make the day that much more memorable.

Here are some tips on including your family in your pictures.

  1.     Discuss the Idea with Them

The first step in inviting a loved one to a portrait session is to discuss the idea with them. This will give them a chance to get as comfortable and as prepared as you are. See if they would like any special photos with you. Such a great idea to get their input too.

  1.     Show Your Love, Appreciation or Admiration

Whether it’s a hug, a lean, or a pat on the back, try to show your admiration and appreciation in the picture. It’s fine to stand side-by-side, but you’ll elevate the picture if you make it a tad bit personal and connected looking.

  1.     Be Candid

Those candid pictures are the moments you can’t script or direct, and they’re the rawest pictures a photographer can take. Having the photographer take pictures while you are sharing a real moment with your loved ones, and maybe even sharing a laugh with them, will produce spectacular pictures. These are the moments you’ll cherish the most because they really capture the emotion and the love.

  1.     Celebrate Your Similarities

You can go beyond matching outfits to showcase your similarities. For example, if your parents are just as into sports as you are, have them bring along their own memorabilia as props. There are so many ways you can show your similarities whether it’s fishing, horse riding, even gardening together - consider the things you both enjoy doing and think of creative ways to include them in pictures.
