Preparing For the Elements When Taking Outdoor Portraits

Outdoor portraits are fast becoming a favorite for both photographers and their clients. But taking pictures outside comes with its own set of obstacles, the biggest one being the weather.

Rain, wind, and even the odd bug or two can make the photo shoot have all kinds of twists, that can either make the day memorable or turn it into a challenge.

So, what can you do to prepare for the unexpected when taking outdoor portraits?

1. Check the Weather Starting a Week in Advance

Depending on when you've booked your portrait session, start checking the weather a week before. Most weather apps will show you a 7-day forecast, and in some cases, you could even get a 10 day or two-week forecast. Anything longer than that may not be that accurate.

It's also great to check at what time of the day it may start raining. This way you can adjust and move your photo shoot plans around as need be or reschedule all together.

2. Prepare for All-Weather

If there is chance of summer rain cloud moving through your photoshoot, you may want to use it to your advantage and prepare for a few rainy shots. Bring some adorable rain boots and a cute umbrella. Jump in a puddle and just have fun. These will be unique shots that may be some of the best of the whole session.

3. Bring Back-Up Makeup and Hair Accessories

Anything can happen when you're outside (wind, humidity, heat), which means your hair and makeup may be in need of a touchup. Therefore, bring backup supplies. A brush, hair ties, bobby pins, and even hair spray or dry shampoo. You should also bring a small makeup bag and handheld mirror so that you can touch up your makeup as needed.

4. Find A Sheltered Location

If you're heading to the park for your outdoor portrait, you may wish to scout for a gazebo, or any place that has a roof, so you can remain dry. Your sheltered location should also have a nice enough background so it doesn't distract from your photograph.

5. Stay Refreshed in the Heat

Rain isn't the only thing that can make an otherwise great photo shoot challenging. Heat can do the same. It's advised that you try to stay cool, bring something to hydrate with, and dress accordingly. When the weather is sweltering, you want to wear breathable, light fabrics. A cute sun dress, shorts or a hat can do the trick. Try to stay refreshed during the photoshoot and keep your makeup and hairbrush on hand for quick touchups.
